Oil, grease and road grime build up fast on plant, trucks and workshop floors. Blixem Degreaser is the degreaser we supply from our Benoni counter to mines, plant hire yards and workshops. This guide covers what it is, where to use it, how to dilute it and how to use it safely. Everything below comes from the Blixem Degreaser product data sheet (PDS), with safety notes from the safety data sheet (MSDS).
What is Blixem Degreaser?
In the PDS’s words, it is “composed of powerful surfactants, builders and anti-redeposit agents” that make it easy to remove grease, grime and oil deposits “in most industrial and automotive applications.” It is water based, so it has no flash point, and the PDS says it suits poorly ventilated places and areas posing a fire threat. It is highly alkaline (pH about 12.5), which helps it lift dirt with less scrubbing.
What the data sheet highlights
- Cleans without hard scrubbing
- Will not attack seals and rubbers
- Economical: it is diluted with water for most jobs
- Biodegradable and environmentally friendly
- Non-flammable: no flash point
- Transparent, with a neutral odour
Dilution guide (from the PDS)
| Job | Blixem : water |
|---|---|
| Workshop floors | 1 : 5 |
| Engine cleaner | 1 : 10 |
| All-purpose cleaner | 1 : 30 |
| Domestic floors and tiles | 1 : 30 |
| Car shampoo | 1 : 40 |
How to use it
- Spray onto the soiled surface and let it soak for a while.
- Brush off or rinse with a jet spray.
- Soak heavily soiled components for longer to remove all the dirt.
- On greasy or oily floors and machinery, work it in with a brush and water as the label recommends.
Use it safely
Because it is strongly alkaline, the MSDS says it may cause eye and skin irritation and is harmful if swallowed. Wear chemical safety goggles or a face shield and nitrile, neoprene or butyl rubber gloves, and keep it out of reach of children. If it gets in the eyes, flush with fresh water for several minutes and see a doctor if irritation persists. Store it between 1 and 40 °C, out of direct sunlight, and avoid outside storage. Always read the label and MSDS before use, and dispose of waste water according to your local authority’s rules.
