AdBlue (AUS 32) for SCR trucks, tractors and plant: a buyer’s guide from Benoni

If you run Euro 5 or Euro 6 trucks, buses, newer tractors or plant, you are already buying AdBlue. The question is whether the fluid going into your tank is good enough to protect a very expensive SCR system. This guide explains what AdBlue does, what goes wrong with poor fluid, how to store it, and what we can show you about the AdBlue we supply from Benoni.

What is AdBlue (AUS 32)?

AUS 32 is the ISO 22241 name for a 32.5 % solution of high-purity urea in demineralised water. AdBlue is the common name in South Africa, and you may also see DEF (diesel exhaust fluid).

How SCR uses it

AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust ahead of the SCR catalyst, where it turns NOx into nitrogen and water. Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines will not run clean, or at full power, without it.

Which vehicles need AdBlue?

Diesel vehicles with SCR after-treatment: most Euro 5 and Euro 6 trucks and buses, many newer vans and bakkies, and newer tractors and plant. Look for the blue filler cap or check the owner’s manual.

Why AdBlue quality matters

  • Wrong strength means faults. Urea outside 31.8–33.2 % trips NOx-sensor and quality faults, warning lights and engine derate (limp mode).
  • Metals and phosphate poison the catalyst. Calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron and phosphate coat the SCR catalyst for good. It cannot be cleaned, only replaced.
  • Biuret and dirt block injectors. High biuret and insoluble matter form crystals and deposits in the dosing injector, lines and filters: costly parts and days off the road.

Never top up with water or fertiliser urea

Tap water and agricultural urea carry minerals and impurities that poison the SCR catalyst and block the dosing injector. Only use AUS 32 that meets ISO 22241, from a clean, sealed container.

Our AdBlue: independently lab-tested

A sample of AVDMM AdBlue (AUS 32) was tested by an independent ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory in September 2026. The lab’s verdict: product meets specification for all properties tested against ISO 22241.

Results apply to the sample tested. Trace-metal and identity checks were run by the same lab outside its accredited scope. See the full results on our AdBlue page.

Storage and handling tips

  • Keep containers sealed and out of direct sun.
  • Use clean, dedicated funnels and pumps. Never reuse oil or diesel containers.
  • Never dilute with water.
  • AdBlue freezes at about −11 °C and thaws without harm.
