What is ISOSYN Technology? Caltex Delo Base Oils Explained

If you run trucks, plant or generators in Gauteng, you will see ISOSYN Technology on Caltex Delo heavy-duty oils. It is not a marketing sticker. It describes how Chevron formulates top-tier Delo products: premium base oils plus a matched additive system, aimed at wear control, soot handling and oil life under real diesel duty.

In South Africa, Astron Energy manufactures Caltex Delo (and related Caltex lubricants) under licence at its Durban lubrication plant, to the brand owner’s standards. AVDMM wholesales that range from Benoni for on- and off-highway fleets.

The short answer

ISOSYN Technology is Delo’s formulation approach: high-quality base oils made with Chevron’s ISOCRACKING and ISODEWAXING processes, combined with high-performance additives and Chevron’s formulation know-how. The goal is diesel-engine parts protection, soot dispersancy and deposit control — with mineral (and related) heavy-duty grades that can deliver protection and durability that rivals synthetics in many fleet applications. That is a performance comparison in Chevron’s framing, not a claim that every mineral oil equals every full synthetic in every engine.

ISOCRACKING and ISODEWAXING — why base oil quality matters

Conventional solvent dewaxing leaves a different base-oil character. Chevron’s path uses catalytic ISOCRACKING and ISODEWAXING to produce base oils with a more consistent viscosity behaviour and fewer of the impurities that fight your additive package.

  • Base oil job: carry load, manage heat, stay stable between drains.
  • Additive job: disperse soot, control deposits, protect cams, rings and bearings, manage acid and oxidation.
  • Formulation job: balance the two so the oil still works when the engine is hot, dusty, stop-start or high-load.

On the Highveld — altitude, heat, dust and mixed urban/long-haul cycles — that balance shows up as cleaner oil galleries, more predictable viscosity retention and fewer “mystery” deposit issues when drains and filters are done properly.

What fleets actually notice

Chevron positions Delo with ISOSYN Technology around:

  • Strong soot dispersion and sludge control
  • Protection of critically loaded parts
  • Engine durability and support for extended service where the OEM allows it
  • Value — premium protection without assuming every unit must run a full synthetic

Careful with claims: oil life and drain intervals must follow the engine maker’s manual, fuel sulphur, duty cycle and oil analysis — not a generic “goes further” promise. Local 50 ppm diesel and Highveld dust both shorten real-world intervals if filtration or cooling is neglected.

Where you will see it on the shelf

ISOSYN Technology appears across the Caltex Delo heavy-duty line AVDMM stocks for Gauteng, including workhorse grades such as Delo Gold Ultra (API CI-4 class) and flagship low-SAPS grades such as Delo 400 SLK (API CK-4). Product choice still starts with the OEM approval on the sump sticker — technology branding does not override that.

Practical takeaway for Benoni and Gauteng buyers

  1. Match API / ACEA / OEM approval first.
  2. Use ISOSYN-formulated Delo where that approval lands on a Delo grade you can stock in one drum range.
  3. Keep drains honest: filter with the oil, manage dust and fuel quality, and use analysis if you want to stretch intervals.
  4. Ask the yard for the current PDS if you need OEM approval lists in writing.
